Kid Book Club Party - End of May Date TBD
HEY EVERYONE: Update May 5, 2023 - unfortunately I am not able to finish planning the book club this month. I apologize but I have alot going on. If anyone would like to take it over please feel free or we can reschedule for the fall. So sorry for the late notice.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
For the last several years, I have hosted a Book Club Party (I can't find the previous posts right now š¤).
A book is picked and we meet up, after reading it with our kids, to have a party. It involves food, decorations, activities, and discussion related to the book. I also try to pick a book that has an accompanying Brave Writer educational curriculum for additional academic support (if desired).
We have done:
The Trumpeter Swan
Mr. Lemonchello's Library (book 1)
The Wild Robot (book 1)
I am gauging interest in a Book Club Party for the end of May.
The book:
The Lemonade War (book 1 in the series)
Synopses and Quotes about the Book from Amazon:
Here is a clever blend of humor, math wizardry, and business know-how. As it captures the one-of-a-kind bond between brother and sister, this poignant novel also subtly explores how arguments can escalate beyond anyoneās intent.
For a full hour, he poured lemonade. The world is a thirsty place, he thought as he nearly emptied his fourth pitcher of the day. And I am the Lemonade King.
Evan Treski is people-smart. Heās good at talking with people, even grownups. His younger sister Jessie, on the other hand, is math-smartābut not especially good at understanding people. She knows that feelings are her weakest subject.
With just five days left of summer vacation, Evan and Jessie launch an all-out war to see who can sell the most lemonade before school starts. As the battleground heats up, there really is no telling who will wināand even more important, if their fight will ever end.
The five books in this fun-to-read series are:
The Lemonade War
The Lemonade Crime
The Bell Bandit
The Candy Smash
The Magic Trap
āA funny, fresh, and plausible novel with likable characters, and is suitable for reluctant readers.ā ā School Library Journal
"The basics of economics take backseat to Evan and Jessie's realizations about themselves and their relationship. Does a good job of showing the siblings' strengths, flaws, and points of view in this engaging chapter book." ā Booklist
"A straightforward plot teaches an important lesson on sibling relationships." ā Washington Times
"This compelling tale about growing up and getting along is appealing and engaging." ā Book Links
Some things to note about the book that I have gathered from reviews:
We haven't actually read this book yet as a family so it will be new to us as well. Please read reviews online/Amazon.
The siblings have a rivalry, this is a single-parent family and the parent is fairly checked out in involvement with the kids, the book ends in such a way that kids can't wait to read the next book (cliffhanger maybe), and there is math and economic principles in the book that many people are pleased with.
Ages:
8-10 (suggested) - older and younger kiddos are welcome. (my boys are 11 and almost 13).
Brave Writer Guide:
If there is interest in this we will meet at the Buckeye Library Meeting room or a Park for our party.
Obviously, we will enjoy lemonade and lemon-related foods and I thought it would be fun for the kids to come up with their own business ideas to share along with discussing the book.
Let me know! Thanks!
